Where can one start with a lifetime of hunting stories? I remember being young (under 10 years old) my very first time I ever got to go hunting with my dad and boy was I excited! We were going rabbit hunting with our beagle. Talk about the rush of a lifetime to be out in the middle of the woods standing quietly with my father as you hear our dog start to bellow out she was onto the rabbit. Coolest thing ever! It's truly the small & simple things that make the biggest impact on your life. I will remember that day for the rest of my life!
There was another time about three years ago I was hunting in Cabot at my boyfriends fathers house. I had a plan to sit ALL DAY! Haha. Didn't work out as I planned. I really had to go...go go if you know what I mean. I'm a girl so it's not like I can pull off what men usually do. After an hour of holding it in I gave in, climbed down the stand and hopped on the wheeler. Took not even 5 mins for me to get to the house.
About 15-20 mins later it was about 1:00 and as I'm walking back to the edge of the wood line to enter the field where my stand was on the opposite side of where I come in. I stop before entering the field to get to my stand. I take a quick look around and there it is the buck of a lifetime sitting right bellow the darn stand, all I seen was white rack as he turned and ran. I dropped to my knees and balled right there.
My boyfriends father kept telling me, "Kylie, just sit all day no matter what it takes!" Well he was right. For all this I went through it ended up being for the best because God had a greater plan for that buck. That very next day (I had gone home with my 3 boys) my boyfriend and his father went out. His father is a hard working man and had been through A LOT of bad happenings that year and the years previous. His father Phil hadn't gotten a deer in a long time as well.
Well he went and sat in that very stand I sat in the day before where that big buck was. Phil wasn't out there for more then I believe it was 20 mins. (I may be off on the timing) and he harvested that exact buck I encountered the day before. Tell me he wasn't the happiest man in the world at that moment and man was it deserved. I knew God had a plan and it was for Phil because there wasn't a single person who deserved that harvest more then him!
Hunting will forever be a part of my life and my family's life for this exact reason. It's a feeling words can not describe honestly. Just pure joy and togetherness is what it's all about! There is nothing in my life that gives me greater satisfaction then to know I am able to continue such an amazing family tradition, for many more years to come! Just being in the woods lights my boys up like nothing else. Video games and TV can't begin to compare with the great outdoors!
