Prepping Your Fireplace & Wood Stove for Winter

There Is So Much to Love About Fall in Vermont!

The foliage, the corn mazes, that crisp cool feeling of the fall air. It is a magical time of year, but Vermonters know that Fall means Winter is around the corner. One of the things that can make the harsh Vermont winters just a bit more bearable is looking forward to the warmth and ambiance of wood-fired heat. Wood-fueled heat is a great option because it works without electricity during an outage. Additionally, with the ever-changing price of heating oil, it can be a great way to save some money on heat this Winter.

But Before You Light Your First Fire of the Season...

  • Clean your stove or fireplace and remove any ash or charcoal from the past season's fires.
  • Inspect your fireplace for any cracks or loose firebrick.
  • Ensure the Chimney and flue are clean and free of debris that could impact airflow and ventilation.
  • Ensure the Chimney is cleaned to remove creosote buildup that can cause chimney fires.
  • Test smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms to ensure they work and have fresh batteries.
