When the temperature is cold it is easy to forget to drink enough water. The Human body is made up of about 60% water. Water carries out many important bodily functions, including regulating body temperature, transporting nutrients and waste, and keeping your energy up.
Many people think of dehydration as a summer problem because of the heat and sweat. However, it is important to consider your water intake year-round. The average person should be consuming about 100 ounces of water a day, but this can vary with health and environmental factors. For example, when you are at a high elevation or breathing cold dry air, your lungs need to work harder to humidify the air you are breathing. This means you will require more water for optimum function.
Tips and tricks for staying hydrated this winter!
- Bring a reusable/ refillable water supply with you. If you are typically exposed to cold weather for extended periods, consider an isolated container for your water. Check out our insulated water bottles from HydroFlask, or our insulated water reservoirs from Osprey, and Camelbak!
- Make a point to drink water with your meals and snacks.
- Limit high sugar and caffeine drinks that will cause you to lose more water.
- Try eating some fruits and veggies with high water content such as watermelon, apples, tomatoes & cucumbers.
