Snowshoes, Trekking Poles and Winter Traction

Trekking season does not end here in October. It changes gear. We stock the poles, boots and packs that carry you through summer and fall, and the snowshoes, microspikes and crampons that keep you moving once the trails turn to ice and packed snow.

What We Carry

  • Snowshoes
  • Microspikes and traction devices
  • Crampons
  • Trekking poles
  • Hiking shoes and boots
  • Gaiters
  • Hiking packs and hydration solutions
  • First aid kits

Choosing Traction for Vermont Winters

Most winter hiking around Johnson, Stowe and Smugglers Notch calls for two things in the pack, not one. Microspikes handle packed snow and the icy sections that show up on lower trails and rail trail stretches. Snowshoes take over once you hit unbroken powder deep enough to posthole in. Crampons are for steeper, harder ice where a slip has consequences.

If you are not sure which one your route calls for, ask Jon. He hikes these trails and will tell you honestly if you only need one of the three.

Dress for It

Traction is only half of a winter hike. Layers, shells and gloves are on our outdoor apparel page, and packs, headlamps and cold weather essentials are on our camping and backpacking page.

We are at 1442 VT Route 15 in Johnson, VT, open Monday through Friday 7 AM to 5 PM and Saturday 8 AM to 4 PM. Reach Jon at 802-635-7282 extension 119, or browse the full outdoor recreation department.
