Vermont weather does not hold still. A morning that starts at 42 degrees and overcast can turn into a warm, buggy afternoon and then drop again once the sun goes behind the ridge. The people who stay comfortable out here are not the ones with the most expensive jacket. They are the ones carrying the right layers.
We stock seasonal apparel for exactly that problem, and Jon in our outdoor department will help you build a layering setup that works across a full day rather than one moment of it.
For most three-season hiking here, start with a wicking base layer, add an insulating mid layer you can strip off on the climb, and carry a shell for wind and rain. In winter, the shell stays on, and the mid layer gets heavier. Cotton is the one thing to leave home. Once it is wet, it stops insulating, and it will not dry on the trail.
If you are heading up higher, footwear and traction matter as much as what you are wearing. See our trekking and snowshoeing gear for boots, gaiters and microspikes.
Pair your apparel with the rest of your kit on our camping and backpacking page, or browse the full outdoor recreation department.
